Alan hyla
Board of education
Alan has been a dedicated member of our Board of Education (BOE) for nine plus years including serving as Vice Chair for the last four. Alan is described as a good listener, a strong communicator, a collaborator, and an effective decision maker with a keen ability to navigate our complex school district five-year strategic plan. He retired from the CT Judicial Branch in 2022 after 34.5 years of state service!
Alan has lived in Old Saybrook since 2011 and highly values being a voice for students, staff and the entire community. He believes being an elected BOE member is one of the most important volunteer roles in our town. He understands the significance of making decisions regarding the public education of our most treasured possession, our children. He appreciates that these are decisions that can directly impact the quality of life in this community for today and tomorrow!
Beyond his work for the BOE, Alan is involved with Special Olympics, works as a Red Cross Volunteer and raises/trains puppies for American's Vet Dog Program. He was co-chair of the community ad hoc committee who fundraised for the High School field lights we enjoy today.
In his next term, Alan will continue to provide leadership that sets high standards for the education of ALL students; continue to support district goals that elevate our student's abilities to succeed during their school years and contribute to society in a meaningful and productive way; support our Superintendent of Schools and staff members in providing the best possible environment for all to thrive; and, support our community in meeting their expectations and aspirations for being a school district of distinction.
In his free time, Alan takes pride in attending our school functions. You can also find him on the field as he enjoys officiating soccer at both the high school and collegiate levels!
